The adult-trade question, honestly
Buying and selling sex are illegal in Vietnam, and where an adult trade exists it hides behind licensed spa and massage signage. We cannot say it is absent from Hoi An; we can say that across 848 sampled Google reviews of 170 Hoi An spa, massage and resort listings pulled in September 2026, the terms for it appear zero times, and that a 2019 travel guide reported the same finding on the street. The documented police cases in this part of Vietnam in 2026 were two hotel-floor spas in Da Nang. Hoi An's venues are on heritage-zone streets, on the night-market islet and on the beach road, in full view, which is a different market.
The tells, in case you need them
Frosted or blocked glass hiding the reception; staff on stools outside pulling people in; neon "Men Spa" signage with no visible waiting area; a hair-wash-only setup with no private treatment room. A legitimate spa hands you an intake form with a body diagram and pressure preferences, swaps your shoes at the door and posts its prices.
What actually goes wrong in Hoi An
| Complaint | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Pushed for a bigger tip at the till | Decide the tip before you pay and hand it over as a settled amount |
| Price agreed on Zalo or WhatsApp, higher price after | Screenshot the quote; confirm treatment, duration and total before you lie down |
| Fifty minutes billed as sixty | Note the start time; pick venues whose reviews mention full sessions |
| Therapist on their phone, or untrained | Book the massage where the massage reviews are good, not just the nail bar |
| Promised a private room, put in a shared one | Ask for a private room explicitly when booking |
| Hotel pick-up no-show | Rare in the record; confirm the same day and keep the chat thread open |
One pattern is worth knowing: at otherwise highly rated Hoi An spas, most of the poor reviews are about gel manicures, pedicures, waxing or head-spa technique, not the massage. Treat the nail bar as a separate decision.
Where the touting is
Street-front soliciting concentrates on the An Hoi islet: Nguyen Phuc Tan and the Nguyen Phuc Chu riverfront by the night market. The worst-rated spa in our whole Hoi An dataset is on that street; so are two of the best. It is not a reason to avoid An Hoi, it is a reason to walk to a named venue rather than follow whoever stops you. The Cam Pho ring, Cam Chau and An Bang beach see very little touting, and most of their spas will collect you from your hotel for free anyway.
Etiquette and what to expect
- Agree treatment, duration and total price first. If you booked by message, keep the thread.
- Say your pressure preference and any injuries up front; the spas that give you an intake form will honour it.
- Tipping is optional. The venues themselves suggest 20,000โ50,000 VND per therapist; 10โ15% of a mid-range treatment is generous.
- Ask for a male or female therapist when booking if it matters to you. It is a normal request.
- On lantern-festival nights (the 14th of each lunar month) and from February to April, book ahead; An Bang Spa asks for two hours' notice in peak season.
- From September to November the riverfront Ancient Town streets can flood; the Cam Pho and An Bang spas sit higher and keep trading.
The safest way to book
Book direct through the venue's website form or on WhatsApp, Zalo or KakaoTalk, which is how most Hoi An spas actually take bookings, or lock a fixed price on Klook or GetYourGuide. Walk-ins are fine at most Ancient Town and An Hoi venues, many of which run to 10pm or later. Every venue in our Hoi An directory is listed with its public Google rating and review count, so you can check the record before you go.
