TL;DR

Yes, for most people. Serious harm from massage is rare, but tell the therapist about pregnancy, osteoporosis, blood thinners or recent surgery, and say "lebih pelan" (more gently) or "berhenti" (stop) if something hurts. Indonesia licenses spas as businesses, but a visitor cannot easily check a certificate, so a published menu and prices is your most practical guide. Adult venues exist in Bali, and the police cases we found were in Badung and Denpasar, not Ubud. In the Google reviews we sampled, complaints were few.

How spas are regulated in Indonesia

Several sets of rules apply, and they cover different things. A Ministry of Health regulation from 2014 covers spa health services: it says every spa therapist must hold a registration issued by the regency or city health office, and requires universal precautions with sterile equipment. A Ministry of Tourism regulation in force since October 2025 sets tourism business standards for spas. Spas register through OSS, the national licensing system, which issues a business number (NIB). Premises can also hold a health-worthiness certificate. Therapists can hold a competence certificate from a licensed body.

What you can check

Ask for the venue's legal business name and NIB, then look it up on oss.go.id. The English brand name may differ from the legal one. Ask to see any certificate the venue says it holds. A business number, a premises certificate and a therapist's certificate are three different documents. We did not check the licence of any venue in our directory, and we found no public search for individual Ubud certificates, so a certificate on the wall tells you only so much.

Health risks: what to tell the therapist

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says the risk of harmful effects from massage appears to be low, with rare reports of serious side effects such as a blood clot, nerve injury or bone fracture. Some of those cases involved vigorous massage such as deep tissue. Mayo Clinic advises talking to a healthcare professional first if you have certain conditions.

If you haveWhat to do
PregnancySay so when you book and ask your prenatal clinician first
Osteoporosis or a recent fractureTell the therapist and get medical advice; forceful pressure may not be suitable
Recent surgery, an injury, a burn or inflamed skinName the area and the date, and ask the therapist to avoid it
Blood thinners, a bleeding disorder or a clot historyGet medical advice before vigorous massage; a suspected clot needs a doctor, not a massage
Allergies, eczema or fragrance sensitivityAsk what oil or product will be used, or ask for none

Published case reports link essential oils to allergic skin reactions, and one 2021 report describes a serious burn from a heated herbal compress. Neither tells us how common these are, and neither involved Ubud. If a scrub burns, heat is painful, or a rash or swelling starts, tell the therapist to stop. Indonesia's ambulance number is 118.

Pressure, and what reviewers complained about

You do not need Indonesian to stop a massage, but these words help.

We read 730 Google reviews across Ubud spas, up to five per branch, so this is a small sample and not a measure of how often things go wrong. Complaints were few: two about pressure, two about a session shorter than described, one about a late appointment and one about a card fee. None described staff demanding a tip, pushing an upgrade, or a pickup that did not arrive. Two other reviews reported a health problem after a massage, one an eye infection and one difficulty breathing; we left those two venues out of our directory.

Are sensual massages legal in Bali?

A label on a menu does not settle it. Indonesia's Pornography Law of 2008 and the Criminal Code in force since 2 January 2026 cover conduct, and we found no rule that makes the word "sensual" an offence by itself. If a service involves prostitution, sexual exploitation or trafficking, or conduct those laws cover, there can be legal consequences. This is not legal advice.

Police have acted against spas in Bali. In October 2024 Bali police told the state news agency ANTARA they were investigating Flame Spa and Pink Palace Spa in Badung over suspected prostitution, and said the businesses held traditional massage permits. In 2025 a case involving Elegantz Men Spa went to court in Denpasar. Those are allegations and charges, and they concern named premises outside Ubud.

Adult venues, and how we screened for them

Searches for massage in Ubud do show adult interest, so a good Google rating is not enough on its own. Before adding Ubud we checked 124 well-reviewed spa and massage brands against adult venue lists and web searches. None of the 124 appeared on those lists, and we left out two over wording we could not resolve. We tested the search first on four known adult venues and it found three, so treat our list as screened, not guaranteed.

  • Choose a venue with a published menu, prices and a real address, and confirm the treatment, length and total price before you pay.
  • Book through the venue's own site, phone or WhatsApp and keep the confirmation.
  • If anyone offers something that was not agreed, or a treatment moves beyond massage, you can stop and leave.
  • Male therapists, low lighting or a male clientele are not warning signs on their own.

What to expect

  • Clothing varies. Bali Botanica and other spas say they provide paper or disposable underwear; some ask you to keep your own on. Ask when you book, and remove only what you are comfortable with.
  • Areas not being treated should stay covered. You can ask for a same-gender therapist where one is available, decline any area, and end the session.
  • Confirm the treatment, minutes, price, tax and card fees before you start, and ask for a receipt.
  • Arrive on time. Some spas say a late arrival shortens your treatment.
  • Hygiene: look for clean linen between clients, handwashing, clean tools and a clean bathroom. This is observation, not an inspection.

Near Monkey Forest Road

The monkeys are a health matter, not a spa one. A CDC journal study names Ubud Monkey Forest as a common site of monkey injuries among travellers who needed rabies treatment. Do not touch or feed them. If one bites or scratches you, wash the wound with soap and running water and get urgent medical advice.

We found no dedicated tourist police hotline for Bali, and no single spa complaints line for Gianyar. For a dispute about a charge, ask reception to explain it before you leave, and keep your booking, receipt and any messages. Use the police for threats, violence or assault.

The UK Foreign Office says reported rape and sexual assault cases are high in Bali and Lombok. That is general advice, not about massage venues, and we did not find a confirmed case of a tourist assaulted by a therapist in Bali. If you are assaulted, it advises getting medical attention and reporting promptly, at a police station with a Women and Children Protection Unit where possible.
